Speech and Language Centre

Chester Speech and Language Centre

Mission Statement and Rationale

We are a County funded provision for primary aged pupils (KS1 and KS2) with a Statement / Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP) which names speech and language as the primary need.

We have up to 11 full-time places which are allocated by the East Sussex County Council’s  SEN Panel.

The Speech and  Language Centre (SLC) is designed to offer intensive specialist intervention with specialist teachers,  TAs, and Speech and Language Therapists, with the aim of returning pupils to mainstream with the necessary speech and language skills to access mainstream . We do not aim to be a setting pupils stay for their entire primary schooling. NHS Speech and Language Therapists attend the Centre several times each week to deliver 1:1 therapy and to liaise with staff. All pupils access individualised speech /language programmes devised by the therapy team and delivered by all staff.

Support in SLC is intensive and individualised according to pupil needs, based on thorough and ongoing assessments.  Pupils go to mainstream classes, with support, for some lessons based on individual needs.

Once pupils have begun to achieve a functional level of speech and language through the intensive intervention, they will begin to access specific lessons in the mainstream class to encourage them to generalise their skills and knowledge. This is in preparation for a return to mainstream education.

Visits and enquiries are warmly welcomed. Please contact the school to arrange a visit. Please note that the Centre is not able to offer placements, this is organised by East Sussex County Council.
